Why It's Important to Show up to Class on Time

Hi there

In the realm of exercise, yoga, and meditation, every minute of class time  matters. It is a step towards achieving personal wellness and health goals. The significance of punctuality in these settings is often underestimated. Leading to disruptions and potential risks for both latecomers and their classmates. This perspective is particularly resonant following a recent incident. I had a student, upset about missing one of my classes due to being 9 minutes late for a 45 minute class.. Here's why showing up on time is important:

Less Chance of Injury

The commencement of any physical class typically involves a warm-up phase. Designed to prepare the body for the more strenuous activity ahead. Skipping this crucial stage by arriving late can increase the risk of injuries. Warm-ups gradually increase heart rate. Blood flow to the muscles, and body temperature. Making the muscles more pliable and less prone to strains or sprains. Missing the warm-up can mean pushing cold, stiff muscles too far, too fast.

Maximising Benefits

Each part of a class structure maximises the session's benefits.  Whether it's a cardiovascular improvement, strength building, flexibility enhancement, or mental clarity. Arriving after the class has started means missing out on foundational exercises. Or meditation practices that set the tone for the rest of the session. This disruption not only diminishes the latecomer's experience. But can also detract from the instructor's ability to provide a cohesive class for all.

Courtesy to the Instructor and Fellow Participants

When a participant arrives late, it disrupts the flow of the class. The instructor may need to pause to accommodate the latecomer. Which can be distracting for other participants engaged in their practice. Late arrivals miss important announcements. Plus modifications catered to the group's needs, including any adjustments for existing injuries. This lack of communication can lead to inappropriate exercises for the individual's condition. Undermining the personalized approach many instructors strive to provide.

Building Discipline and Respect

Punctuality in fitness settings also cultivates personal discipline. Plus respect for the shared goals of the group. It demonstrates a commitment to one’s health. It acknowledges the effort and preparation the instructor puts into each class. It fosters a supportive and focused environment.  One where every participant can rely on a collective respect for the class structure and timings.

A Memorable Encounter: The Need for Yoga

One of the most telling experiences occurred several years ago in 2018. A student, arriving five minutes late to a restorative class, found the door locked.  A "Do Not Disturb" sign posted. as per the studio's policy to ensure an uninterrupted, calming environment. His reaction was to bang on the door! Quite a shock! This underscored a fervent, albeit misplaced, need for his yoga practice.   His current practice hadn't taught him to accept he was late and to do his own practice or wait for another class.

This incident illuminates the essential balance studios must strike between accommodating individual needs. Plus maintaining a serene, safe, and structured class environment. I respect studios that apply their tardiness policies consistently. As it fosters an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding.  Ensuring all participants can  immerse in their practice without interruption.

Embracing Personal Practice as a Safety Net

Developing your own practice, means that missing a class doesn't derail your well-being. Having a personal practice to fall back on offers a beautiful safety net. I can speak from experience; missing a class is not the end of the world. It shouldn't ruin your day. Instead, it's an opportunity to lean into your personal practice.  Reinforcing the idea that your journey to wellness is uniquely yours. Resilient to the occasional hiccup.

The Takeaway

The simple act of showing up on time represents much more than basic etiquette. It's a cornerstone for injury prevention. It insures the full benefits of the session are realised. It demonstrates respect for the collective experience. And when life happens, and you miss a class, remember it's not a setback. Try not to blame the instructor. There are important reasons behind it.  Let it be an invitation to embrace the autonomy and resilience of your personal practice. In doing so, we can all contribute to more effective and enjoyable experiences in our shared spaces of growth and healing. While also fostering an inner sanctuary that is always accessible. No matter the external circumstances. Through consistent policies and a personal commitment to punctuality, we nurture the community. A community that values respect, discipline, and the shared pursuit of wellness.
